Finding the best Aikido Gi can be a challenge.
Most of the time we order our Gi’s from online sources unless you are lucky enough to have a specialty shop nearby, most of us are not lucky enough to have one so instead, we have to trust the manufacturers to advertise honestly online.
I have found that it is pretty, even odd, that you will get a great Gi as well as a not so great one when you order from online sources.
So I wanted to help you to make informed choices so that you are able to make a purchase with confidence and know that you were buying the best Gi possible for your budget and needs.

Here is where a lot of people struggle.
How much should you spend on a Gi to get a great Gi?
The answer is very simple, at each price point you can find a Gi that is best at the price point.
It is not really how much you have to invest but a matter of finding a trusted source that takes pride in their work.
While it is strongly suggested that you do not expect too much from super cheap options it is also suggested (unless it is for a competition) that you do not go overboard by spending too much for practice options.
I reviewed mid-range priced Gi’s to accommodate the majority of buyers.
What Makes a Gi Best?
Clearly, there are two things that make a Gi best:
Of course, you cannot judge either when you are looking at a picture so I have done it for you. I have honestly reviewed quite a few garments to determine which offered:
- Comfortable wear
- Durable fabric
- Washed well
- No drags or seams that could be grabbed during competition
It may not sound like a lot to ask when you are asking for both comfort and durability but the two can be a little hard to find together.
In many cases what I found is that the options that were highly durable also were a bit uncomfortable because the material was a bit heavy.
On the flip side of the coin, I also found that the options that were highly comfortable sometimes did not wash well or felt like they were not going to last long.
Luckily I was able to find 10 options that fit the bill nicely.
They all were durable, wash well and offered a great deal of comfort.
TOP 10 Best Aikido Gi Reviews 2018
Fuji Judo Uniform Review
There are a few things that we really liked about this option:
- True fit
- Durable material
- Washed really well
- Affordable pricing
The fit was true on the pants but if you were a little broader across the chest than you may want to consider going up one size.
The material is a single weave and relatively lightweight yet durable. Some people that we talked to said that they felt a little warm when wearing it.
This is an entry level gi and meant to be used as one.
It would be ideal for practice and even competition for beginners. This is a great value for the price.
It held its shape and did not shrink after several washes (it is 100% cotton though so you do want to line dry it or dry it on the low cycle in the dryer).
I really liked this option especially for the beginner because it is so inexpensive yet it is not “cheap”. For the price, this is an excellent choice for anyone that needs an additional practice gi or for the beginner. It is an all-around great option in so many ways and it is super low cost.
If the budget is tight or you are not sure how committed you are to the sport yet this would be a great gi to get started with!
The next option is a double weave, you can expect to pay more for double weave options because they are meant to be far more durable and are great for competition purposes.
Adidas Judo Double Weave Gi Uniform Review
This is an impressive gi by any standards. The material is very dense and almost feels impervious. It can take a lot of abuse.
Some of favorite points about this garment is:
- The durable material
- The extra thick collar
- The comfort of the material
As a double weave you would expect bulky or heavy material but it is relatively lightweight and soft. It moves well with you and you do not feel that stiffness that you can find with some double weaves.
The collar is nice and thick without being uncomfortable.
The overall craftsmanship is ideal.
The double stitched seams are good and tight. The only issue that I found with this gi is the sizing. It runs big. Quite a few people mention that the size they choose was actually their normal size but they should have gone down a size for a better fit.
The sizing is an issue because it can be a bit difficult to shrink in the washer which of course points to the fact that it holds up really well after being washed but does not help you if you order a size that is too large.
If you order one size down you should be fine. I really liked this gi and did some testing over the course of a few sessions and found that it held up great and I did not have any issues.
As long as you order your size correctly you will be very happy with the quality, comfort and durability of this model.
The next best is from Sanabul and it is a new release:
Sanabul Essentials v.2 Ultra Light BJJ Gi Review
Sanabul is a well-known name in martial arts wear. They have produced some very popular options and the Essentials V 2 may actually catapult to the top of the heap.
There are plenty of things to love about this gi:
- Preshrunk material
- True fit
- Three color choices
- More athletic cut great for practice
- Anti-odor treated material
This is an essential gi that will work really well for any summer practice session and competition.
The material is a single lightweight, breathable weave that is treated with anti-microbial and anti-fungal treatment to keep odors down and prevent fungal infections.
It offers a stiff collar that is rubberized AND comfortable.
This may be the perfect gi for anyone that likes a more custom fit to their garment.
The sizes run “true to fit” which means you can rest assured that your gi will arrive ready to wear.
The preshrunk cotton material means that you do not have to worry about washing your gi (hang drying is always recommended even in preshrunk cotton garments).
Frankly, I was pretty amazed by the gi.
Most gi’s you have to wash and break in during several sessions to get a comfortable fit but not with this one. As soon as you open the package you will be delighted by the lightweight feel and the soft comfortable material.
At first you may feel like this is too lightweight and too soft to really hold up well, but it does. I took it to task and gave it a few whirls during quite a few heavy-duty sessions and it just really held up!
Hayabusa Goorudo 3.0 Gold Weave BJJ Gi Review
This Hayabusa gi is popular for several reasons:
- Soft and durable
- Sharp design with Kanji words Courage, respect, pride and strength
- Reinforced knees
This handsome Gi is built with attention to detail with heavyweight gold weave, reinforced at the stress points, and made with high-quality cotton.
This gi wears well, it is strong yet maneuverable.
Be careful when washing because the Gi is known to shrink, hang it out to dry, that will maintain it’s size.
However, if the Gi is too big, a pass or two through the dryer will shrink it down to fit.
Tozando Essential Aikido Gi & Pants Set Review
This Gi made the list due to these beneficial features:
- Lightweight single weave
- Low price point
- Minimal shrinkage, only 7 to 8%
This set is the best gi for aikido beginners.
Designed with no back seam, making the set ideal for aikido. Plus, the set uses durable Sashiko-style cotton on top and flexible Hishizashi-style cotton for the pants.
This set is reinforced at the knees, and good for everyday practice.
The Gi does tend to run large, and since it is designed to shrink less than other styles, consider this when ordering.
Yamato Sakura Bleached Single Weave Judo Gi Review
Favorite features of the Yamato Gi are:
- Low key aikido Gi – No extra patches of decorations sewn on
- Simple, yet effective drawstring waist band. No elastic
- Single weave, washes well, becomes soft
This single weave Yamato Gi is light yet sturdy. It washes to become soft, without feeling as though it may wear out.
The single weave is good for beginners because it allows movement and feels comfortable.
This gi is plain, I mean that in a good way. It has no extra patches or color that make you stand out.
This Gi will shrink if washed in warm water or tossed in the dryer, so be aware of that when choosing your size and washing it at home.
Top Quality BUTOKU SEIKA Bleached Aikido Gi Review
This BUTOKU Gi made this list because:
- Double weave
- Minimal, only one brand patch sewn on.
- Belt included
- Great price
This double weave gi is durable and tough enough for the more advanced Aikido moves and makes a great practice Gi.
It lasts longer than other Gi’s in the same price range, and is of surprisingly good quality, considering the price.
The Gi is strong and functional, and very much recommended for those looking for an economical gi.
Mizuno Shiai Competition Gi Review
This attractive Competition Gi deserves a spot on this list because:
- Offered in half sizes for a perfect fit
- Stiff Gi, sturdy and protective
- Competition cut
This Gi is well made and durable, and will not show wear, even after months of use. It is several steps above the “Cheapies” in terms of toughness, style and fit.
This double weave Gi is solid, without being as cumbersome as other double weave Gi’s. It maintains its integrity, while giving you flexibility and ease of movement.
Be aware, this Gi does tend to run large and does not shrink as much as some less expensive Gi’s. It will shrink a little if washed with hot water and dried in the dryer, but don’t count on that to get a good fit. Use the size chart.
Elite Sports IBJJF Ultra Light BJJ Gi Review
This Elite Sports Gi deserves recognition. Our favorite aspects of the Gi include:
- Excellent Price
- Lightweight cotton pearl weave
- Treated to be antibacterial, anti microbial
- Striking design and several colors to choose from
This Gi is made from Smooth pearl weave cotton that dries quickly and is treated so it will not become stinky or put you at risk for a fungal infection.
Gi has a corded waist to get a secure fit so your pants will stay up, even during live rolls.
This Gi comes at an amazing price, it is a great bang for the buck, especially considering the quality of the cotton and the small design details like cuff and side slits.
This Gi is preshrunk, and will not shrink too much, but it does shrink some, so be aware of that when ordering your size. Some have mentioned the shoulders were too narrow, so if you are between sizes, go up one size.
Vector Lightweight Preshrunk Atilla Series Gi Review
The vector Lightweight gi has several benefits I like, including:
- Low price point
- Quadruple stitch, holds it’s own under the stress of grappling, lock rolls and more
- Rip stop material and reinforced knees on the pants
- Tapered cut, not a lot of extra fabric weighing you down
This Vector Atilla series Gi is treated to be anti fungal and anti microbial. Bonus!
The pants use a drawstring close, for a snug secure, worry free fit. The pants also have reinforced knees and are made with 10 Oz rip stop material so they take a beating like a champ.
The collar incorporates EVA foam which is difficult for your opponent to grab, but prevents the Gi from chafing your neck. I like that feature.
This Gi has a lot of design detail, including patches, the brand name at the shoulders, contrast stitching and piping detail. In other words, you will stand out. If you enjoy that, great! If you don’t like to be noticed for the Gi you wear, another option may be right for you.
Choosing the right gi is a very important part of being able to train comfortably and of course compete with confidence.
I hope these reviews help to make your search easier by providing you with some key information about the gi’s that made the top of the list.
I discovered that you really do not have to spend a lot of money to find a gi that is reliable, that fits well and that can last for a while.
In some cases, I found that paying less actually worked out better because then you could buy more!
You can find the perfect gi at the perfect price point.
Use these suggestions as a great way to narrow down the options and make a choice that you will absolutely be happy with. There is no reason to chance it, when you have the solution right here for choosing the best aikido gi options out there!
