Atama Single Weave Gi Review

The Atama is a Single Weave Brazilian design that is lightweight and easy to wear. This gi is made from 100% cotton and is suitable for training in warm conditions and places that experience hot weather. Although the material is light and airy, it is very durable and its single weave design makes it very comfortable indeed.

The Atama comes with embroidered Atama Jiu Jitsu logo on both sleeves. The pants are reinforced on the knee area to provide extra protection and durability. The outfit is approved by the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation for use in competition and we think that it is excellent for training too.

The Atama Single Weave gis are the industry standard for a single weave gi. It is a no frills outfit that enjoys a simply designed jacket and durable pants.

There are few patches and embellishments, but what they do have make the suit look elegant. If you are attracted to simple designs and prefer to be discreet, then this is a perfect suit for your needs. You can get a blue, white or black outfit, all of which look good and are able to be used in competitions.

The weave of the Atama makes it very easy to wear and we were pleasantly surprised by its comfort levels. Made from a material that is light as a feather, you may be concerned about the durability, but we will talk more about that shortly.

The Atama has a nifty piece of embroidery on each sleeve, which makes it stand out and adds something a little different than you usually see on BJJ gis.

The fabric was made to breathe, specifically designed and marketed for summertime use, and is said to be comfortably soft as well. The cut of the Atama allows for a good deal of room in the shoulders, so if you have a bigger build this will be quite accommodating for you. The jacket is also ideal for those who like more room to maneuver when they are fighting.

This gi provides a good balance between being lightweight but also being mobile and fast-drying. A good all rounder and certainly an outfit that has impressed us.

There is a general concern about shrinking, but no more than you would usually expect. Some people have left feedback that the pants on the gi do suffer from shrinkage after it has been washed a few times, so this is something to be mindful of.

The nature of a single weave means that the fabric is much thinner than other weaves, so that they are lighter. Whilst this weave will let you breathe a little better, it does have its downsides in terms of durability. With reinforcements in the knees, elbows and crotch, this single weave is able to stand up to thicker weaves with ease.

The jacket is made from one piece of fabric, much like some latest styles coming from other manufacturers but this has not provided any real issues for us.

Overall, we would say that light is not all good, but it is not all bad either. What you gain in terms of ease of use, you lose slightly in strength, so it really comes down to personal preference. If having a lighter weight gi is important than this would work great for you. As an added bonus the patches offers some unexpected durability so those that are more into durability than lightweight may find that this gi will work out nicely for them as well.

The jacket enjoys a tapered body and sleeves and the cut is made to be difficult for your opponent to grab but still leave room for mobility and comfort.

A thicker than average collar also helps when it comes to an opponent’s ability to grapple. The design is clean with two Atama logos embroidered on the sleeves leaving many options for custom patches.

We like how light this jacket feels and it would suit practice during summer time or in warm places. This jacket is made from a single piece of fabric and is quite plain in design, so not great for those who like a little bit of flair.

That is not to say that the jacket does not look good, it does look great on and enjoys an understated elegance.

Atama Single Weave Gi

Like the jacket, the pants of the Single Weave are made from 100% cotton and are nothing to write home about, really. These pants are ripstop classic, but with the same type of patches as on the jacket. Even though the pants are nothing fancy, they are durable and they wear well, particularly in the crotch area.

As mentioned earlier, some people have companied about the pants shrinking, so this will need to be taken into account when sizing up.

If you are looking for a simple and functional gi, the Ataman is great value for money and an outfit that will leave you pleasantly surprised. Atama is one of the famous BJJ brands and you can certainly see why. This go may not get people talking in terms of its appearance, but it will quietly get on with the job in hand and let you focus on your winning moves.
